Systematic Continuous Improvement (SCI) Insights

improving work is part of the work itself

What if improving work was part of the work itself?

What would happen if … continuous improvement wasn't treated as an occasional activity, but worked as part of the organization's operating system?

Here’s how they do it at FastCap, a Washington manufacturer of woodworking tools and products:

  • Each morning, employees gather to review what happened yesterday, discuss errors, recognize customer compliments, share improvements, and learn from one another.

  • They also conduct a regular improvement walk, and ideas are captured in short videos so everyone can see what changed and why.

Do you notice what's happening there? Continuous improvement isn't left to chance. It's built into the way they operate.

Lots of organizations have some improvement tools and activities—suggestion boxes, online portals, occasional brainstorming sessions, and others. Those approaches can produce worthwhile ideas, but that’s very different from a genuine system that builds routine processes for continuous improvement into the way work is done every day.

Regular team improvement huddles, structured reviews of work processes, and other recurring routines create a natural rhythm for people to identify improvements, build on one another's ideas, implement better ways of working, and recognize one another's contributions.

That's the essence of Systematic Continuous Improvement (SCI).
