No reflections this week. Just straight talk from an amazed client.
We started our work the same way as usual with regular team improvement huddles– two pilot groups of 6 front-line workers in each – following the standard process:
1 hour per week for 4 weeks
Review the metrics for their work areas
Each person offers one improvement in a round-robin format
Describe the purpose/value – safety, efficiency, quality, etc.
Specify the first step – or the next step – by whom by when
Set target date for completion
At the end of the 4-week pilot, the two groups came up with a total of more than 50 improvements– with estimated savings and gains for the first year alone in the tens of thousands of dollars.
When the president, who is normally a proper spoken gentleman, saw what they had done, he blurted out –“Holy s**t, I had no idea they could do that.”
No surprise to me, though. I see it all the time when companies set up routine processes for all employees to offer ideas on how to make work safer, faster, easier, higher quality and more consistent with less friction, tension and stuff falling through the cracks.
