Systematic Continuous Improvement (SCI) Insights

difference between motion and momentum

The difference between motion and momentum.

It's easy to mistake activity for progress. To overcome that illusion, organizations need to build the momentum for sustained improvement into their everyday operating system.

That’s what caught my attention about Meyer Tool & Manufacturing, a precision manufacturing company in Ohio. They don’t just treat improvement as an initiative or a series of sporadic, one-off activities. They've built a regular cadence of team huddles, Gemba walks, visual performance boards, monthly town halls and shared performance metrics into the way work is managed.

The result isn't just better processes. According to the company’s president, “The little wins each and every day have built our momentum into the best year we’ve ever had.”

He went on to say that continuous improvement had become “a voice for every person on our team.”

That story reinforces an important lesson.

When improvement becomes part of the organization’s rhythm through structured work processes and routines, people naturally become more engaged in finding ways to work better, faster, easier, safer … on and on. Individual improvements build on one another. Team performance grows stronger, and the cumulative impact produces remarkable bottom-line results.

That’s the essence of Systematic Continuous Improvement (SCI). Sustainable momentum isn’t created by occasional breakthroughs. It’s created by an operating system that routinely engages people in optimizing individual and team performance.
