Systematic Continuous Improvement (SCI) Insights

airplane on tarmac

They hired consultants. The breakthrough came from the baggage ramp.

Delta Air Lines is obsessed with on-time performance. In an industry where minutes matter, it's one of the most important measures of success.

And Delta is very good at it. Their flights arrived on time 82.6% of the time in 2023, 83.45% in 2024, and 80.9% in 2025—earning them recognition as North America's most punctual airline for five consecutive years.

A while ago, Delta wanted to improve those numbers even more. So they hired a major consulting firm to study the problem and recommend solutions. The consultants came back with a variety of ideas. Some were useful. Some were expensive. Some were difficult to implement.

Then a group of front-line employees came up with an idea of their own. Normally, a tug pushes an aircraft straight back from the gate, turns it 90 degrees, and then the pilot starts the engines and taxis away.

The employees asked a simple question:

"What if we pushed the aircraft back at a 45-degree angle instead?"

That one change reduced pushback time, allowed planes to start their engines sooner, and prevented aircraft from blocking nearby gates.

One simple idea with big impact.

What I like about this story is that the breakthrough didn't come from the consultants. It came from the people closest to the work.

That's a lesson many organizations miss. The challenge isn't finding smart people. Most organizations already have them. The opportunity is creating the principles, practices, processes, and tools that routinely tap into their ideas.

That's what systematic continuous improvement (SCI) is all about.
